Students were interviewed in summer 2006 and here is what they had to say about their experience in China. These interviews have not been edited for any language or grammar content. |
John Sharp, BLCU
How do you like your current experience in
China?
I am having an amazing experience in China. I
never thought China would be so amazing in so |
 |
| many different ways. I especially loved traveling to different cities in China, and eating the thousand type of food available for a very good price. I
would very much recommend studying abroad in Beijing, for anyone who has the slightest interest in China. |
Crystal Chang, BLCU
How did your study abroad experience help
you?
Apart from speeding up the learning of Chinese, |
 |
my study abroad experience helped me in finding new friends, and learning about my own culture that I did not know anything about. It made me really proud that I originated from this culture. |
Christina Yu, BLCU
Why do you want to learn Mandarin?
One of the biggest reason that I wanted to come
to China and learn Mandarin is because of the |
 |
speed that China's economy is growing. My major is economics and reading enough of The Economist convinced me to come and see it for myself. I also know that I want to work somewhere in international trade; by studying abroad in China, I believe it will give me a little more leverage than a person who has not. I think I am not the only one that thinks this way. A couple of my friends want to do more or less the same thing that I want to do; something with international trade/business. |
Eric Schultz, BLCU
As a person who never learned Mandarin
before, do you believe the summer study
abroad program helped you in giving you
a solid foundation? |
 |
I think it gave me much more than a solid foundation. Before I started learning Chinese, people always told me that Chinese is very difficult or that it's impossible to learn Mandarin for a non-Chinese speaker. However, during my study abroad I became very confident in learning Chinese. Our classes were very thorough and easy to follow. I felt I learned a lot. I know when I returned back to the United States, I will continue learning Chinese without having that mental block that Chinese is difficult.

Nathan Velasquez, BLCU
What advice would you give to new students
coming to China in summer?
If you are coming during summer, I strongly |
 |
advise you to bring insect repellant. Summer is a good time for the mosquitoes to feast on you; a simple insect repellant could very easily solve this experience.
Another thing, don't be afraid to try different food. I think as long as you eat in a restaurant and not in the street counter you should have no after effects.
Realize why you came to China! If it is because you want to learn Chinese, make Chinese friends, take advantage of the tutors, watch Chinese television and make it possible to learn the most, in the time that you have. You have to do all this while having fun and keeping in open mind. |
