In encAbroad, we will make it our goal to make your experience in China unforgettable.

Do you like your current experience in
China?

Studying abroad in Beijing gives you the
best of the two worlds. I am studying and

having fun at the same time. Of course I don't feel guilty, because the more students I talk to, the more I am practicing my Chinese. I have visited other cities in China, and I would say Beijing definitely seems like the coolest place to hang out and study.

How did your study abroad experience
help you?

I think most people when they enter their
college experience, they more or less have

an idea of what they want to do. However, all that of is limited in the boundaries of their imagination, which for most students is inside the United States. When I studied abroad, it made me realize that there are other places in the world and many different opportunities. My study abroad experience helped me in realizing new ways of thinking by appreciating a culture that is magnificent in so many ways.

Why do you want to learn Mandarin?

I think ever since I was in 7th grade, I was
very interested in Chinese history. By the

time I entered college, the future of China seemed even more interesting than its past. I decided that I should learn Chinese and see if I would like it. It takes a little getting used to, but if people take their studying seriously they should not have much problem getting comfortable with it in a short time.

As a person who never learned
Mandarin before, do you believe the
summer study abroad program helped
you in giving you a solid foundation?

I am very satisfied with the amount that I have learned in such a short time. Our instuctors spoke fluent English and were able to communicate successfully with us. The instructors knew that we were going to be here only for a short time, so they taught us the most useful expressions. Within the second week, I was able to order the food I liked and the items I needed without having to point to it. I think this just says a lot. I would say, overall, I built a nice solid foundation of learning the language in six weeks. I do understand that it will take me a much longer time to become fluent.

What advice would you give to new
students coming to China in summer?

Most people forget that a studying abroad
does not actually mean that you study all

day/ every day. That would be missing the whole point of studying abroad. While studying abroad, people need to take advantage of experiencing the new culture and the new way of life. I believe that the biggest mistake that someone could make is not taking the full advantage of experiencing the culture, the food, the people, and the new places and cities. You can experience all this and still have a wonderful time doing it. You just need to equip youself with an open mind and the understanding that you are in a different country, so they might do things a little bit different than what you are used to.
